India-ITME showcases and disseminates information on innovative technologies, acts as a catalyst to growth of the textile and textile engineering industries, textile professionals, textile technologists and consumers. The India-ITME Society also facilities and supports research and education through scholarships and grants disbursed via prestigious institutes like Veermata Jijabai Technical Institute, Mumbai (VJTI, Mumbai) and Indian Institute of Technology, Powai, Mumbai (IIT, Mumbai).

Since the inception, India ITME has so far held 8 very successful International textile machinery exhibitions. These global exhibitions are held every 4 years to display modern technology, innovations and new market opportunities relating to textile machinery, accessories and components under one roof.

Background

Textile machinery manufacturing in India started in the post independence era.

The problems faced by the Indian textile industry in repair and maintenance of the imported machines from U.K. were the compelling factors leading to establishment of the first machinery manufacturing units. As the textile industry started growing, growth of domestic textile machinery manufacturing took place. By the 1960s, a complete range of spinning machinery, weaving machinery and a limited range of processing machinery were being manufactured.

The growth of the textile machinery industry was substantial during late the 1970s and the manufacturers felt it necessary to have a large forum to project its technology before the domestic textile industry.

Thus came the aspiration to conduct textile machinery exhibitions of international standard in India. The thought turned into a reality in 1980 with the first Textile Machinery exhibition at the Backbay Reclamation Ground in Mumbai.

To organise and conduct exhibitions, an Organisation Committee was set up, consisting of representatives of the following sponsors.

  • Textile Machinery Manufacturers' Association India (TMMAI), Mumbai. (75 Textile Engineering Units)
  • Indian Textile Accessories & Machinery Manufacturers' Association (ITAMMA), Mumbai. (About 500 Textile Accessories & Components and Machinery Units and Traders)
  • The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), New Delhi (12 Regional Textile Mills' Associations which in turn serve over 2800 textile mills, 39 million spindles and approx. 2.00 million powerlooms)
  • Textile Association India, Mumbai (6500 Technologists covered by 30 branches all over India)
  • Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) New Delhi (A Government of India Organization)

The Organisation Committee suggested that international textile machinery exhibitions be organised in India in the name, 'India-ITME' and a separate Society with the above five organisations as sponsors be formed to hold such exhibitions every four years.

The Organisation Committee also constituted a Steering Committee consisting of Chairman, Vice-Chairmen, Honorary Treasurer and select representatives from the sponsoring organisations of India-ITME.

A constitution was accordingly drawn up for the India-ITME Society with the aims, objectives, rules and regulations.

Thus born the India International Textile Machinery Exhibition Society in the year 1980 popularly known as India-ITME.

India-ITME has created an undisputed platform for showcasing domestic as well as international textile machinery. It also has the desire to commit an international standard exhibitions centre in India with the hope that it bears fruits in the years to come.
